Vedic astrology relies on its various dasha systems, or predictive
systems for making predictions. The sage Parashara, considered
to be the 'father of Vedic astrology,' prescribes no less
than twenty six different dasha systems, in his classic authoritative
text, Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. For instance,
Vimshottari, Yogini, Kala Chakra, Ashottari, Chara, etc. Some
dasha systems are 'conditional' dashas, meaning that they
are only applicable if certain planetary combinations are
present in the chart. For instance, Dwisaptati Sama Dasha
is only applicable if the ascendant lord is in the 7th house,
or the 7th lord is in the ascendant. While other dasha systems
are 'unconditional' dashas applicable to any chart.
Of these twenty six different dasha systems the Vimshottari
Dasha is by far the most popular and widely used system. Here
are a couple quotes by sage Parashara confirming the value
of this system:
Maharishi Parashara replied: O Brahmin! Dashas are of
many kinds. Amongst them Vimshottari is the most appropriate
for the general populace.
- Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra ch46 v2-5
In Kali Yuga the natural life span of a human being is
generally taken as 120 years. Therefore, Vimshottari Dasha
is considered to be the most appropriate and the best of all
Dashas.
