THE LILY

A lily,
a little star upon the earth,
purest white and fragrant,
bloomed there under the cedars,
across the field,
where no one saw her.
And her sweetness wafted to heaven
without a herald upon the earth;
she came and went
in all the miracle of her glory,
with none but the eye of God
to look upon her…
I chanced to find her
when but two petals, dry and withered,
remained
and her fragrance had spent itself
upon the wind…
I bent to touch her,
and she gave into my hand
all that was left of what she was…
such a gift!
I bowed,
and the earth at her feet I kissed…
no one sees, and no one knows;
she comes and goes
in a purity and silence unspoken…
but the sun smiled as he kissed her
in the brief days they were together,
and the stars at night
mirrored her image in the heavens…
and all the earth was blessed
by her being,
there under the cedars,
across the field,
where no one saw her…
