Namaste Friends,
It's natural as human beings to resist change, especially change for the worst. Isn't it what we fear the most? Nobody wants to lose anything they value: relationships, health, job, finances, living situation etc. In Vedic astrology undesirable change is associated with influences of the malefic planets Saturn, Mars, Rahu and Ketu (secondarily the Sun) and the malefic or dusthana houses 6, 8 and 12th. Of these three the 8th house is considered the most malefic being the house of death, chronic illness, debts & misfortunes, obstacles, scandals, among other equally nasty outcomes.
The malefic influences in our chart deliver us our negative, undesirable karma during the times of the their dashas and transits. While this may be true it can lead to a defeatist attitude that we're victims of fate and the misfortunes we're facing are our punishment for our previous bad actions. Bad things just happen, get used to it. Why resist it? After all change is the only thing that doesn't change. Yada, yada, yada.
So what about the silver lining, the blessing in disguise, the wonderful 'opportunities for growth' that malefic time periods also bring? Or do things really, actually, totally and justifiably "suck."
If we don't look beyond our surface frustrations to the depths of our life lessons we're missing the real gifts of the 8th house - transformation and change.
