Viewing the Incredible Venus Transit - June 8, 2003
Namaste friends,
As you may recall from my last newsletter on June 8th marks the incredibly rare Venus when it will pass between the Earth and the Sun. This astronomical event hasn't been seen for about 121 years. If you miss it this time you will be given another chance in 8 years in 2012. Many are speculating that it represents a global shift of the heart - Venus being the planet of love. I'll accept that. I'd rather err on the side of optimism especially during a time when positive press is the rarest of all events.

In Vedic astrology when Venus is conjunct the Sun it is considered combust - burned up by the heat of the Sun's rays and weakened. This will typically happen several times a year since Venus is never more than two signs away from the Sun. Normally Venus goes unnoticed, but not this time. It will resemble a freckle slowing moving across the face of the Sun. Venus's visible position in front of the Sun on June 8th does suggest it's strength and eminence in this case. The Sun represents authority and power and Venus somehow on this day gets the upper hand. Some are saying that it represents the undoing of patriarchal authority and the emergence of the divine feminine.

I hope you'll have the opportunity to view this phenomenon wherever you live (with Sun filters!) and perhaps you will develop your own opinion about it's significance.

India's Supreme Court rules in favor of Vedic astrology!
Last month India's supreme court ruled in favor of astrology as a legitimate academic subject suitable for colleges and universities. This is a significant victory for the field of astrology that hopefully will set a precedence for other countries to follow.

You may remember reading about the pending status of the supreme court's ruling in the interview I did with Sri K.N. Rao in my article "The Largest Astrology School in the World" mentioned in the February newsletter and published in the Winter issue of the Journal of Astrology. Rao was the only astrologer who petitioned the court and defended astrology as a legitimate science which his school, the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, has proven through substantial research over the past nearly 20 years.

Bush Under Attack - Saturn's Transit Over Sun
Bush has been under significant attack by the media over the past few weeks which I mentioned in the March issue was likely to happen while Saturn transits over Bush's natal Sun. Right now Saturn is at 19 degrees Gemini while Bush's Sun is at 20 degrees. The Sun represents one's status and authority and Saturn checks or limits the Sun.

What this has amounted to is harsh criticisms of Bush's Iraq policies and character in general. Al Gore gave a stunningly blunt speech accusing Bush of "ruining the economy, destroying the nation's standing with its allies and waging a war in Iraq based on lies and deception."

Even Time magazine, a conservative publication, had a recent article seriously questioning Bush's Iraqi stance and criticizing his administration for the Iraqi prisoner photo fiasco.

Probably the most dramatic of all was the success of "Fahrenheit 9/11" which won top awards at the Cannes International Film Festival. "Fahrenheit 9/11" accuses the Bush administration of stealing the 2000 election, overlooking terrorism warnings before September 11 and fanning fears of more attacks to secure Americans' support for the Iraq war.

Michael Moore, the director, received a 20 minute standing ovation which had never been received for any film in history. This film should be in theatres this July to continue this theme of attack on Bush while Saturn transits close to his Sun throughout the summer.

Holy Man Who Rolls for World Peace
June 2004
Daily Times Monitor

A Hindu holy man known as Ludkan Baba, or Rolling Baba, is rolling his way to Lahore on a mission of peace, Nick Meo reports in The Times.

It was in 1983 that the wandering holy man Mohan Das first decided to make his pilgrimages more of a challenge by rolling along the ground instead of walking. Since then he says he has rolled more than 20,000 miles across India to spread his message of love and peace. Before he started rolling, he had spent seven years standing up, leaning against a swing to sleep. Rolling is much more fun and has put him in the Guinness Book of Records, he says.

He set off on his latest adventure in January, inspired by the peacemaking efforts of Atal Behari Vajpayee, the former Indian prime minister.

He is currently rolling down National Highway No 2 Between Agra and New Delhi, still some 500 miles from Lahore. Every few miles traffic comes to a complete halt when villagers swarm on to the road to seek the holy man's blessing, forming a chaotic scrum with the entourage of hymn-chanting pilgrims trailing in his wake.
